Denver, Colorado (March 13, 2023) – A $7.4 million verdict has been rendered in Denver District Court against a trucker employed by Knight/Swift Transportation Trucking Company in a multi-car crash that severely injured one driver (the first rear-ended in the crash), announced 18-wheeler injury trial lawyer Peter M. Anderson with Colorado Truck Accidents.com. The Denver-based jury included millions for economic, non-economic and physical impairments stemming from the crash.
On September 27, 2018, in morning traffic near exit 278/Quebec Street on I-70, the Knight/Swift truck driver crashed into stopped traffic, first totaling the plaintiff’s pick up before proceeding to sideswipe a number of other vehicles. No brakes were ever deployed by Swift’s trucker. The 39-year-old plaintiff, a father of five, was the driver in that very first vehicle that bore the brunt of the impact; he suffered mild traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and spinal injuries.
“The Knight/Swift truck driver had an obligation under federal law to drive responsibly on the road. With a cargo load of over 20,000 lbs. the duties are even higher, but safety was ignored from the moment he climbed into the cab to the moment of the wreck,” said Peter Anderson.
This collision was far from an anomaly. According to data compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, between February 2021 and February 2023, Knight/Swift truck drivers were involved in 34 fatal accidents, and 301 crashes resulting in serious injury.
Peter M. Anderson has been representing those seriously injured in trucking crashes for many years. In the past two years alone, he has tried four 18-wheeler semi-truck jury trials; recent truck crash verdicts & settlements have exceeded $40 million.
“Trucks are the lifeblood of our commerce system; they transport more than 70% of all goods in the United States, with a net value of over $10 trillion. Nonetheless, we need these big trucking corporations to care more about safety than the almighty dollar,” said Peter Anderson. “Semi-truck crashes injure, or kill, a person nearly every 15 minutes in the U.S. Annually, this results in half a million accidents and approximately 5000 causalities in a given year.”
